34YES The Daily K Lefty Williams is God
Rock and Roll is such a temporary thing; audience, and artists, come together for just a short while. Stages are erected, and then stages are dismantled. You leave the show with just a memory, and or maybe with a t-shirt, and or a cd.
I left The Lefty Williams Band show at Vinyl in Atlanta, Georgia, last night, with a smile on my face. For nearly two hours, my eyes, and my brain, had been mesmerized by a fascinating, and liberating band.
I had long known that band leader, Lefty Williams, was a genius on guitar, but now there is this other guitar player in the band who is equally as engaging, and entertaining: Adam Cain. And there is this incredible bass player named Lex Luther, certainly a super hero at his instrument. And...there is this drummer, Steve Saunders. These guys are bad ass.
For most of the show, I hugged the stage, not wanting to miss a note that The Lefty Williams Band kicked out, but for awhile I went to the back of the house to see how the band looked, and sounded, from there. From a distance, they also looked, and sounded fantastic.
A gentleman who might have have a cocktail or two inside him, came up to me and ecstatically said, "He is awesome isn't he? Simply awesome?!"
"Yes," I said, sober as hell, "He is awesome.""
"I grew up in Texas," the guy said, "And I used to smoke pot with Stevie Ray Vaughn, and this guy is as good as Stevie..."
The guy he was talking about was Lefty Williams. Check Lefty, and The Left Williams band out, soon. And buy a t-shirt, and a cd; they will fuel your memory of a great evening.

NO FOOD COLUMN
Can people really be addicted to food?
http://www.dailyspark.com/blog.asp?post=can_people_really_be_addicted_to_food
I find that if I leave food out, in kitchen, that I will crave it when I gaze upon it; so, obviously my best move is not to leave food out in the kitchen. A minute ago, I had to put some bagels up, as I started craving one, as I walked in and out of the kitchen to make my coffee; I know that I am having oatmeal for breakfast, not a bagel.
I said, "That hot sauce is going to be here a long time after you are gone," referring to a new hot sauce that she had turned me onto, and she said, "I'll be with you, as long as that hot sauce is on the shelf."

33YES MUDCAT REVOLUTION
It is 4:44 a.m in the morning, and I have just downloaded the new Mudcat CD, "Hotstuff." The first song hits me in the face like a wet kiss from a slightly drunk lover; I mean I have lived this song, standing in front of Mudcat, and his band, night after weekend night at The Northside Tavern in Atlanta, Ga. It is as if I can see Mudcat a smiling, and a singing right here from my desk. That is how real the cd is, how great a job it has done of capturing the legendary bluesman live.
I met Danny Dudek around 1985 in a place called Kool Korner in Midtown, Atlanta, Georgia. Dok Lazlo had called, and asked me if I wanted to meet Angela Bowie. With no money in my coat, I headed over to the restaurant, where Ms. Bowie cooked breakfast for Dok, and I. It was kind of a surreal experience, but another neat thing that I got out of it was that I got to meet the dishwasher, a friendly, smiling fellow who seemed to be very happy to be alive, even though he was washing dishes. This fellow was Danny Dudek, aka Mudcat.
Mudcat has never let me down, and he has, from what I have heard, never let anyone around him down. On stage, and off, you can depend on Danny Dudek. On stage, or seated on the floor of a place without a stage, Mudcat can be counted on to give an energetic, thorougly entertaining performance.
Mudcat puts his heart and soul into each, and every, song that he sings, whether he is playing to a packed house, or is just singing to a few folks in the room, before the place gets packed. Offstage, though the man has achieved an international reputation, Mudcat is down to earth; no attitude, no bullshit; he is still the happy go lucky, wide-smiling guy that I met at Kool Korner so many years ago, when fame was just a glint in his eye.
Mudcat dropped out of The National Shakespeare Conservatory giving up an ambition to be an actor for a dream of being a musician, and he started playing on the streets of New York City. One day, as he was playing his guitar, and singing, for a group of people, one of New York's finest came up and told him to, "Put that guitar down."
Mudcat put the guitar down, but kept on singing to the people.
After he arrived in Atlanta, Mudcat continued to singing on the sidewalk to the people. He was joined for a number of years by by Evan Lee Frayer, and David "Snave" Evans. The trio was a regular fixture on the streets of Atlanta.
"We would quit a job to play on the streets at certain events," relates Mudcat, pointing to The Piedmont Park Arts Festival as being one of those events.
The trio would make tapes, and put them out in front of themselves with a sign that said, "Free with a five dollar donation." The rule at The Festival was that street performers could not sell anything.
Each of these men has continued on musically, Mudcat with his band, and often playing solo, Snave with his band Snave and The Grass, and Evan with his band. Out of their one musical union, three great bands have emerged.
Because it says it as well as I could I am going to let you read part of the recent Mudcat email, that those who sign up to be on his list receive:
Saturday, January 29th we release the newest Mudcat CD HotStuff, a collection of fifteen songs culled from the Mudcat catalog recorded between 1994 and 2009. HotStuff is named after my organic XXX hot sauce/marinade, and the recordings and flavors are equally adept at setting your senses ablaze!
To celebrate this release, Mudcat and band, including chanteuse Lori Beth Edgeman and longtime Mudcat/B.B. King trombonist Joe Burton, will be performing tunes from the CD, as well as other old favorites and new material, one night only at Northside Tavern, 1058 Howell Mill Rd, Atlanta, GA. Music begins at 10PM; $10 cover; 21 and over. Club info: http://www.northsidetavern.com.
This is a night that you do not want to miss. The songs on the "HotStuff," cd are amazing, capturing the essence of Mudcat. The night will be amazing because Mudcat, and his band are amazing.
Ringo Starr once sang, "You got to pay your dues, if you want to sing the blues," and Mudcat has payed his dues, and you can reap the benefits of such by being in the audience, this Saturday, and by buying a "HotStuff," cd and some hotsauce/maranade made by Mudcat.
There is a Revolution happening in music, and Mudcat is leading the charge.

35YES “I usually take a two hour nap from one to four”
--Yogi Berra
“No day is so bad it can't be fixed with a nap.”
--Carrie P. Snow
“Set aside half an hour every day to do all your worrying; then take a nap during this period.”--Source Unknown

I reached a point in my life where I was tired all the time. I would sleep from 8 to 12 hours, wake up, take the kids to school, come back home and sleep until it was time to pick the kids up from school, and then I would sleep until it was time to go to work; and no matter how much I slept I was always exhausted. I also snored a lot, and I snored very loudly, and very deeply. One night, I woke up in the middle of the night to see my gal sneaking out of the bedroom, holding her pillow.
"Waaaaaaaaaaah," I said, "Where are you going?"
"You snore too loudly," she said. "I can't get any sleep."
The next morning, over toast, my gal told me that she thought that I might have Sleep Apnea. I had never heard of Sleep Apnea, but I was very tired of being very tired all the time, so I called a Sleep Doctor, and made an appointment.
After consulting with The Doctor, he sent me to a sleep lab, where I spent the night, my head hooked to a multitude of wires. The result was that I did indeed have Sleep Apnea.
From that point on, over a decade ago, I have slept with what is known as a CPAP machine. I wear a mask over my nose that shoots air down my nostrils keeping my breathing passage open. Besides being a bother to the woman, or man, that you love, Sleep Apnea is also very dangerous; it can kill you.
My CPAP machine has made an incredible difference in my life. These days, I am well rested, and don't snore like a volcano about to erupt. God Bless America.
You can read more about Sleep Apnea at this Wikipedia link, and by Googling it.

Dude is visiting, and I hear a skirmish between my cat Kobain, and Dude. Dude is half rotweiller, the large half, but Kobain is hissing at him like he don't care what breed Dude is part of, or how big he is.
Usually, Dude is the guilty one, in these little fights that the two have; he follows the cats about the abode like they are long lost friends. Kobain wants no part of Dude's friendship, but, right at this moment, he wants part of Dude's breakfast, and I have sanctioned Kobain's raid on Dude's meal, unwittingly, calling Dude to task because the cat is hissing at him.
Kobain has his fill of Dude's food, and walks off. Dude follows him; he seems slow to learn that the cat wants no part of him. As the two walk off, my other cat, Jaggar, strolls up to Dude's bowl, and starts eating. Dude comes back to his bowl, and Jaggar starts hissing at him. It is not until Jaggar has left that Dude can start to eat his breakfast. And here, all along, I thought that it was the dog picking on the cats that was the problem when Dude visits.
I was up at 7:30 a.m., this morning, to find that Bundy had knocked out all the electrical cords, in one outlet, so I had no internet, and couldn't figure out why, for a minute. Bundy likes to sleep on the cords; poor dog, maybe I should buy him a bed.
Some guy, on the internet, read what I wrote about buying Bundy a bed, and left what I interpreted as a sarcastic comment, of sorts; he said, "All good dogs deserve a bed."
You raise your dogs, pal, and I'll raise mine. A funny thing happened though, as I was walking home from Yoga, last night: my neighbor, Lisa, was out on her porch, and I hollered hello at her from the sidewalk. She hollered to come in for a minute, and said that Jackson, their loaner dog, had gone back to the farm that he came from to breed other dogs, and did I want his bed for my dogs?
Bundy has a bed, now, and is sleeping on it this very minute. Things mostly work out the way that they are supposed to, if you let them. I give praise to my Higher Power who has kept me sober for 19 years on February 5. It is truly a gift to be alive. I have to take the dogs out now. Have a great day.
-------------------------------------
On my bulletin board I have a picture of a friend who got shot in the jaw, and lived; and I have a picture of a friend who did drugs, one night, as he often did, and died. I have pictures of my kids on the bulletin board, and I have a picture of my grand kid. Each one of the pictures serves to remind me of how beautiful life is.
-------------------------------------
Someone stole my wooden giraffe, off of The Love Porch, and they left the head to my cookie jar pig sitting next to the pig's body, which means that they opened the pig up hoping that there would be something of value in there. There wasn't. And there was no money left on the grocery store gift card that they took, either; I had used the card to scrape snow, and ice, off of my neighbors car.
Do they really think that I am stupid enough to leave cards with value out on the porch?
The porch has not been violated, before, in the 2 1/2 years that I have lived here; but I was warned by The Landlord, when I moved in, not to keep anything of value on the porch, that homeless crack heads sometimes wandered the neighborhood.
What the hell does a homeless crack head want with a wooden giraffe?

Atlanta painter, and blues/rock artist Clark Vreeland turned 60 on Saturday, January 29. This is no small feat; Vreeland lived the hard style rock and roll life for much of his life, consuming enough drugs, and alcohol to have certainly put him under at a young age, but Vreeland is a survivor, and he gathered with friends, and fans, to celebrate his 60th at The Railroad Earth Recording Studio, where Vreeland has done much production work over the years. Every Picture tells a story, don't it?

37YES
"The Doctor said that I was going to live. Well, he didn't say that, but he didn't indicate that I was going to die."--Mikel K
"The world we have created is a product of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking."--Albert Einstein
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful commited citizens can change the world - indeed it is the only thing that ever does."--Margaret Meade
Changing the world could mean looking out for one another more than we currently do. One way of looking out for others, that is really easy to do, is to give blood.
I was walking the dogs, awhile ago, and I remembered hearing something about the blood supply being low, due to the recent storm. The Red Cross offices are located near my house; there is no reason for me not to go down there, and get pricked. I am no longer scared of needles, like I used to be for so many years. I am going to give blood, sometime this week, and I will, soon, bring back a report for you of the whole experience.
http://eastgeorgia.redcross.org/blood_services.htm
I love peanut butter on toast. I had two pieces of bread left; one I put in the toaster, and the other I thought about breaking in half, and throwing to the dogs, who were gathered near, expecting something to be thrown to them. I didn't give the bread to the dogs, though; I saved it for myself, and I soon ate it, also, because the first piece of toast with peanut butter on it tasted so good. The dogs can't always get what they want.
I love the dating adds on Face Book. There seems to be a dating service for every social, and economic, group among us. One ad recently asked, "Do you want to date beautiful women that are looking for successful men? Join Meeting Millionaires today. Hey, I'm going to join this one, right away. I am successful. Broke, but successful.
Yoga class, tonight, was challenging, and interesting. I almost did a full back bend for the first time in my life. I am amazed how Yoga is teaching me to do things that I could never do before, how to do things that I thought were impossible for me to do. I give thanks to my teacher, and to all her teachers, and to all the teachers who taught the teachers who taught the teachers all the way down the line to the beginning of it.
I just had the last of this batch of chili for lunch. I can't wait until I make the next batch. I am a home made chili addict. The dogs want to walk. Whoever said that you were your dogs' master? I am their humble servant.
My cAT, Kobain, is puking up hairballs in the hallway, while, after their walk, my dogs, Morisson and Bundy make loud noises chewing their hard dog food. It is a bit rainy out; I'm wondering what kind of a day we are in for, weather wise, but I am not driven enough to search out a weather report.
I was all happy because my daughter, Scout, called and wanted me to bring her a home made lunch; I have learned to grab onto these small moments of seeing her, being the busy teenager that she is. Do you know what she said to me, when I handed her the lunch? She said, "I have to hurry; I'm late for class!!" They grow up so faaaaaaaaaast!
I was wide awake at 4:14 a.m., this morning,so I went with it, and got up, and I have been writing. This time of the day really is pure for writing. There are so few distractions, because the world is still asleep. Bundy has figured out that the new bed is his. He loves it. I love Bundy, in spite of himself. I m trying to get a pic of him on it, but every time I stand, he comes running to me

Leave your shoes at the door
Leave your shoes at the door,
to keep germs out, was a suggestion,
that I read, tonight, on the internet.
What if you have more than one pair?
What if you have a hundred or so pairs;
should you build an outdoor patio for your shoes?
Jan. 2007

The Unemployment Office is schizophrenic; they sent me 2 letters saying that my unemployment would be extended to State Benefits, & yesterday, I got one that said that I was being cut off. Since it is such short notice, I will probably have to let my internet, & cell phone go, in the short run, until I find a job. Anyone who can help me with some Tip Jar money for the electric bill, & food would be most appreciated.

"The Doctor said that I was going to live. Well, he didn't say that, but he didn't indicate that I was going to die."--Mikel K

What if you have a hundred or so pairs;
should you build an outdoor patio for your shoes?

My dog, Bundy, is a barker. He barks when people walk by our house; he barks when people walking their dogs walk past our place. He barks when I am getting ready to take him outside for a walk. He barks at the porch door, waiting for me to open the door, so that he can go for a walk, and h barks at our front door, waiting for me to let him back in the house. His barking irritates me. My other dog, Morisson, very rarely barks. I would like to train Bundy to be less of a barker. The article below was of great help to me. I have started saying, "NO" to Bundy when he starts to bark, and he is barking far less in all of the above situations because of my firmmess with him. Knowledge is the key to most anything, and I am always glad to learn something that will help me live more peacefully with my pets:
A No-Barking Bark Training Checklist:
Every time your dog barks inappropriately, go to him and shout "no." Then, an instant later, either spritz him lightly in the face with the watery mist of a clean spray bottle, or, give him a token, two-fingered smack on the nose. If you choose to smack your dog, keep in mind that your goal is not to inflict pain or injury on the animal. You are just trying to ensure that his every bark is followed immediately by a consequence that he finds unnerving and unpleasant. So be careful not to use too much force, and be especially careful dispensing punishment to puppies, who are extra fragile. The rule then is: Don't hurt the dog. Just make sure that after each and every bark, he suffers an unpleasant, unnerving consequence that is just harsh enough to cause him to want to avoid experiencing it again in the future.

I am diabetic, and overweight. I have lost nearly 20 pounds, recently, by measuring my food, putting realistic portions on my plate, and exercising. Recently, I have not been measuring my food, and I am figuring that when I go see my dietitian, next week, that I will have gained back some of those precious pounds that I lost. Diet is a matter of life, and death for me, as a diabetic; my weight can kill me. I found the below article interesting, and invigorating. We should all eat healthy:
"Some pseudograins like quinoa, amaranth, millet, and buckwheat are much better for human consumption but other than that I would pass on the bread and pasta if I were you."
"If you want to eat eggs, then make sure to eat the WHOLE egg – the way it is was meant to be eaten. When the yolk and white are eaten together, its nutrients are better absorbed because all the nutrients are working synergistically."

K Poems (These poems are from Mikel K's forthcoming book of poetry, "Someday I will start The Revolution):
We Are The Children
We are the children of the sun
and the stars.
We are the children of the hippies,
who were strung out on peace and love,
and heroin when they conceived us.
We are the children of alcoholics,
conceived in blackouts.
We are the children of the punk rockers,
screwed into this world on beer and anger.
We are the children of the poor,
raised on welfare and food stamps,
and government housing.
We are the children of the middle class,
borrowing from the government to get a college degree,
to get a job with a pension from Corporate America,
who has already fired our fathers and mothers,
before they could retire.
We are the children of the rich,
who, like our fathers and mothers before us,
care only about obtaining more wealth.
We are the children of the doctors, dentists,
and lawyers, who care more about their Porsches
and Mercedes than they do their patients.
We are the children of the American dream,
roaming the streets with a blanket,
and a garbage bag full of aluminum cans.
We are the children, who now have the children,
and we hope they won't learn racism from us,
like we learned it from our moms and dads.
We are the children who can change the inevitable,
alter our destiny, change the future from futile to
fruitful.
Amen.

Someday I Will Start The Revolution
Someday, I will start the revolution,
but, this morning, I had to bring cleats,
and a baseball uniform to my son.
Someday, I will start the revolution
but, for right now, there is cereal to buy,
and Nintendo games to rent.
Someday, I will start the revolution,
but my son's sneakers are worn,
and he needs new clothes for the spring.
Someday, I will start the revolution,
but my daughter needs a new dress,
and I've got to come up with the money
for her next guitar lesson.
Someday, I will start the revolution,
but I've got those student loans to pay back,
and these credit cards to pay down.
Someday, I will start the revolution,
but I've got this new apartment,
and the cable hasn't even been put in.
Someday, I will start the revolution,
but right now I am late for work.
Someday, I will start the revolution,
but I need new tires for my car.
Someday, I will start the revolution,
but I may want to get a Masters in poetry,
or creative writing, first.
Someday, I will start the revolution,
but this woman just walked by,
and, man she looks good.
Someday, I will start the revolution.

Look At The Bums
Look at the bums,
here another one comes;
last week, maybe he had
a job in a factory,
but they downsized.
CEO got a bonus
for thinking that way;
everybody, especially
the stockholders, thinks
that he s a great man
eats off a ten thousand dollar plate
at the White House,
shakes the right hands.
Here comes a bum,
got a tear in his eye,
I immediately criticize,
say that he is a crack addict
who will want a quarter
from me.
He asks for money for food.
Why don t you get a job?
Why don t you get a job,
like me?
See,
you and me
we're living in the land
of opportunity.
Oh no,
I just lost my job.

"THE DELIVERY GUY," is Mikel K's popular underground memoir about that period of his life where he went from an LSD soaked, alcohol laden music writer poet rock star wanna be to a sober father sitting in the Little League bleachers watching his son grow up as he ran the bases. This book will make you laugh. It will make you cry, and then it will make you laugh, again.
